Hello!
I'm going to start with one of my favorite books : Orange is the new black. Written by Piper Kerman. I'm currently re-reading it. It's amazing. Also it's very different than the series on Netflix...
What interested me in the beginning was the prison life. When I was 17, I was in a hospital for eight months... I had little freedom. It was in many ways like a prison. People lied, formed friendships but didn't always get along perfectly. It was a very unique experience and also a really hard one.
What I love about the book is the humour and the realness of the experiences. No fake account of life in prison. I get sometimes so frustrated with the "system" and I have been playing with the thought to write to the adresses at the end of the book and make a stand against the horrible things that are caused by the management of the prisons in the states. Compared to Finnish jail, it's barbaric. Just as the experiences described in Girl, Interrupted by Susauna Kaysen, about a mental institution on the East coast of the states, the conditions are horrid. I hope that everyone who reads these books will want to change the conditions in both jails and hospitals all over the western world. Not to mention the conditions in other parts of the world. We have surely been blessed here in Finland, where it's almost like a holiday to go to jail. That's not that good either. At least we have good health care and not the astronomically expensive hospital bills that I have heard of in the United States.
Well, what do I really know about these things? I have been watching the news, some documents and of course read the true stories about Susauna and Piper. I'm not an expert, I'm just very interested in these things.
Bye for now!
